I just had a virus (malware actually) “infect” my computer that tried to pass itself off as being “XP Smart Security“. This is not a real Microsoft product, but a scam.

It will attempt to fool you by saying it is “XP Smart Security”, “Vista Smart Security”, or “Windows 7 Smart Security” (depending on which Microsoft OS you use) and looks very official. It will run a scan and tell you that your computer is infected with loads of viruses. It will also tell you things about your computer that are incorrect (the firewall was down was what clued me in). It will attempt to get you to “buy” the program as well (that’s the scam). You will find it is spyware if you google the program.

The best way to prevent it is to use a good anti-virus or anti-spyware program to detect it.

Check out this page for info on how to get rid of this pesky programme.

It’s far more of an annoyance than a threat, but it will truly annoy you if it gets on your computer.
